Department of Pathology was established in 1965 as one of the departments of Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGM&R) in a small room of college building of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later in 1971, the department was shifted to the third floor of B-block of former IPGM&R. Subsequently the department was finally established in the fourth and fifth floors of B-block and later incorporated as a department of BSMMU during its inception in April 1998.
In the beginning, only histopathology service was provided. Later, cytopathology service was introduced from 1973.

Academic courses:
The initial postgraduate degree offered by the department was MPhil in Pathology under Dhaka University from 1968. From 2007, M.Phil. course has been discontinued. The course duration was for two years including submission a thesis in the final year. In 1998 MD course was introduced in Pathology. The course is of five year duration and consists of fulltime departmental attachment ensuring students’ regular participation in histopathology and cytopathology reporting, grossing of everyday specimens, fine needle aspiration of enrolled cases, departmental tutorials, journal clubs and slide seminar sessions. In the final part which is for two years, the students have to submit a thesis before appearing in the final examination which consists of written papers, viva voce and practical sessions. FCPS Histopathology part 2 course students also come to this department for their training and second part of the course. At present, the department has a total of 30 students including MD Pathology students and trainee as well as MPhil Pathology (last batch) students.

Academic activities
1. Lectures: Lecture classes on different topics of general pathology were delivered to MD, MS, MPhil, Diploma and FCPS students of various disciplines of BSMMU (one hour each, three days a week). Lecture on medical genetics for clinical and pathology students (8 classes).
2. Tutorials: Tutorial classes were arranged at the department for students of pathology, dermatology and dental surgery.
3. Journal clubs: Departmental students were encouraged regularly to make presentation on different interesting topics followed by discussion (one every week, total 15 held).
4. Slide seminars: Departmental students were given interesting/ difficult/ rare unknown cases of histopathology and cytopathology slides with brief history, usually one set per week, to make diagnosis on their own. The slides were discussed under multihead microscope with official diagnosis and relevant theoretical aspects (total 22 in number).
5. Protocol presentation: Departmental final part students presented thesis protocol before finalising their thesis topic. Relevant clinical teachers were invited to join (Five in number).
6. Thesis progress evaluation: Evaluation of progress in thesis was done by the faculty with constructive criticism and modification (once a month).
7. Interdepartmental clinicopathological conference: Interesting or controversial or rare cases were presented and discussed in collaboration with relevant clinical departments (2 in number).
8. Special lecture: A special lecture was made by Guest speaker Dr. Obaidul Haque of John Hopkin’s University, USA on ‘Tissue Banking’ on 17 Dec 2009.

D. Quality control programme
1. Consensus meeting: Everyday the difficult, unusual or rare cases are seen and discussed by all the consultants altogether to make the final diagnosis.
2. Malignancy Board: Everyday, as a precautionary measure, the malignant cases are confirmed by a board comprising of several consultants.
3. Histopathology and Cytopathology audit: Once in every month, cases of histopathology and cytopathology are drawn at a random and reviewed by all the consultants to find out discrepancy or errors.
4. Laboratory audit: Once in every month, the consultants all sit together to review the total number of each of the departmental services including histopathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, frozen section and cytogenetics. And also to find out whether there is any problem concerning any of those services and to discuss measures to solve the problem.
5. Cytopathology service streamline: Cytopathology reports are now given on the second day considering the day of collection as the first day. There are two FNA collection rooms which are open from 8 am to 4 pm every working day.
